Ugh

maelstrom's CPU overheated last night. It didn't take the system down, but my stupidity did. Blah! Anyway, things are working for the moment, but I'm concerned. And didn't sleep much since this happened at four in the morning.

Ath 2400 + mobo fo 99 bux at Fry's. Only 4x AGP, but, gee, I don't think you'll care for your unix system. :) Memory is 53 bux for 512 meg. IF th sale is still on. The Fry's Magic Numbers for these are:

#3618925 = board/cpu combo
#3111370 = 512 meg DDR

Have a day!

The motherboard you get is an ECS EliteGroup: Mainboard K7S5A Pro.

Reviews for this brand have been generally positive, the only issues having been with non tech users, which are generally cleared up in the forums post-haste.

Reviews: http://www.8dimensional.com/mainboard-reviews/ecs_mainboards.html#ECS_K7S5A_SiS735

I randomly clicked some, and they were pretty glowing, with a high price/perform ratio. Usually 9 out of 10 stars on these reviews, 8 out of 10 by grumbling Win 98 users trying to get their sound to work.

Check out support for your flavor of *ix, and rock on.

Speaking from experience, I had a really bad one with the K7S5A. The only manufacturer I've never had a problem with is Asus. I've had decent success with Gigabyte, MSI, and Epox.

It just seems to prove the old adage: You get what you pay for.
