Dresden

99.9% of the people on my friends list already know that Jim Butcher (with whom I am acquainted but I am not close enough to him to call him a friend, honestly, but I've known him for a damn long time now) managed to get his Dresden Files novels picked up as a series on Scifi. It premiered tonight (or is premiering in less than an hour on the west coast, but DirecTV for us as the east coast feed for the Scifi channel).

Non-spoilery review: Somehow I was under the impression it was going to follow the first novel more closely; and some parts they kept very close to the novels and some parts they appear to have chucked, but so far nothing that they've changed really bugs me in any way.

I think my biggest gripe is that it would've been better served as a 2 hour pilot movie where they could've done a slightly extended plot, had a little more in the way of introducing characters, history and what not, and not felt quite so rushed (because there was still quite a lot in the way of introductions).

Actually...now that I think on it, this really feels like it was actually a 2nd or 3rd episode initially and perhaps some of the history stuff was spliced back in. Hm. But that doesn't feel right either, at least one or two scenes in it were pretty choreographed. Hard to say. Anyhow, it was pretty decent, and I look forward to seeing where they take this.

Now I wait for [livejournal.com profile] da_zhuang to either get home or tell me not to wait for him for BSG.

Woo good for Jim. :) Mony liked it, a lot of people I know in the Furry community liked it too. Over all, positive reviews. Not glowing, but not every new Sci Fi can be hot right out of the gates like Heroes and Torchwood. :) It's a good time for Sci Fi.

According to the podcast, I think this started out as a two hour premier, then got pruned back to ninety minutes and then further pruned to a regular one-hour episode.

Yeah, there were a lot of things that I thought they could have really messed up, but you know, the changes they made didn't really affect me a lot, with the sole exception of the woman playing Murphy. That bugs the hell out of me. Even Bob doesn't bother me. For some reason, Murphy bugs me. *shrug* Maybe she'll bug me less later on. Here's hoping. That all said, I really enjoyed the show.

I wasn't too enthused after the first viewing, they tried to fit too much into 1 hour to be enjoyable. That being said though, I'll give it a few more episodes.

It was all right. Good enough to watch a second ep, certainly.

This was a second or third episode. The Sci Fi execs (not the producers) decided to air the first five episodes in a different-than-written order.

Storm Front -- the original pilot, now cut down to 1 hour length -- is getting aired fifth.
