Lynette and I spent the weekend (all of it) rearranging our bedroom. One nice thing about this duplex is that the master bedroom is sizable, which is good since it serves as both bedroom and sort of office-like place for both Lynette and I.
The new arrangement is significantly more comfortable for both of us, since now we're beside each other, not one behind the other. Also, large amounts of wasted space have been freed up and the center of the room is a bit more clear. It makes it easier for people to come in and not feel kind of claustrophobic from all the stuff.
I also picked up a couple of 'wall mount cabinets' and a 5' countertop from Home Depot. With some C clamps and a couple of angle brackets, they make a nice hutch for my desk. Sadly they are the wrong color, but if I feel like spending some money again in the near future, I just might try to find replacements in a color that at least somewhat matches the desk. Also, the cabinets have no back so I need to attach something to the back so that the shelving won't slide around. And, actually, I need to get a couple more shelves. All in good time.
I also put up my whiteboard, and we got a corkboard--so really, my desk is, in fact, very much like an office. This is a good thing because programming for fun is pretty much exactly like work, and it's a lot easier to do when I have the right kinds of materials around me.
So, here's the layouts.
Before and After.
Addendum:
maelstrom is still in the corner where my old desk was because either I string a whole bunch of cables over there, or I leave the switch & DSL modem in that corner and get a second UPS for them. I will probably do one or the other since it means maelstrom currently has no console.
Also, my HEPA air filter is not shown, but it's by the bookcase by the cat tower.
OH yes, and 'cat' does refer to 'cat tower' but I was too lazy to change it.

Date: 2003-07-30 09:42 pm (UTC)It's amazing how much changing around the layout of a room can do for changing how the room feels. And it doesn't seem like a huge change, but... I can totally imagine the flow of the room improving vastly.
(looking around bedroom)
Curse you both!

The airflow through the room is better with the fans being in very open space, or above the furniture so they aren't blocked.
I LOVE this setup.

I mean, we'd have to bring the food to it. Get real.
