So they claim to have received 4 offers. They're going to sleep on them and decide what to do tomorrow. They indicated they may counter, but one of the offers was significantly for more than ours.

They say.

I dunno if I believe them. I'm not really set on this place, as much as I like it, so I'm going to wait and see. If they really have a better offer, that's ok, they can take it; I'd rather lose the place than let them play hardball.

nothin' up mah sleeve...

It's a stress play. They're trying to get you to bid up to beat your phantom competition.

Always be willing to walk away, and you win every time.

There are lots of nice places to be had. Don't let anyone rush you.

Ditto.

Always be prepared to walk away. It's a tactic. Just shrug and take it.

Fuck 'em.

That's a chickenshit tactic. If they have a real offer, then they should be making a counter offer or selling. Period. If they're getting what they want for the place, they're done. If not, they raise the bar to all bidders, right then, and give YOU the luxury of sleeping on it.

Now they can come back with a 'we'll take a last minute counterbid but now that we've waited you have to hurry, no really, I need to know right now!!!!1111oneoneone!!'

Grrrr. I hate that. Real estate is supposed to be about the win-win situation. Putting people on hold while you 'sleep on it' is a not-too-subtle intimidation (to quote GPB). That isn't win-win.

Our business plan is almost done, so we may be looking into pre-forclosed and forclosed properties as quickly as 2 weeks from now. If you aren't on a clock, I'll tell you what I find. Or if you get bored, I'll drop off some books so that you can do some looking yourself. :)

Good luck.

unrelated to the real estate musings (but wishings of luck in that!!!):

I noticed you'd posted a support request about wacky font sizes a few days back. Not sure if my info might be helpful, but thought I'd mention it. Sometimes I've had the font on all my stuff randomly change size like that, but it's always after visiting a site that I don't usually visit (like checking out a new journal or somesuch), and the only way I've found to fix it is simply to close and reopen the browser. I'm guessing that something in the new journal's settings is funky and screws up my viewings of the rest of LJ. This most recently happened to me when I checked out [livejournal.com profile] caves.
