In reference to My comments on the NFL Good Behavior Policies
Sam Brandon, a backup safety for the Broncos, just received a 2 game suspension for the first 2 games in 2007.
For arrests for domestic violence in 2004 and 2005.
The charges in 2004 have already been dismissed. I don't know anything about the charges in 2005.
This. This is a load of crap.

Absolutely
Date: 2007-07-13 08:27 pm (UTC)But it's not a crime against the sport. Punch a ref, or another player? Sell your teammates jerseys on eBay without their knowledge? Gamble on the sport? Take drugs that are banned by the league? Go into the stands on a rampage? These are all football crimes worthy of suspension.
Selling pot, beating your wife, and murdering hobos are not. They're for the regular justice system to address. And it's sufficiently hard to make it to games if you're incarcerated.

Date: 2007-07-13 10:18 pm (UTC)The reason Brandon just got nailed by the league is that he got arrested during last season for 'violating the pre-trial bond conditions' for the 2005 arrest (which was supposed to go to trial in November 06) - plus violating a restraining order related to the domestic assault charge. So both of those got tacked on in 2006 to the original 2005 arrest proceedings.
And he couldn't be suspended last year because he went on Injured Reserve for the 2006/07 season just a few weeks later with a blown knee - you can't suspend someone who already isn't going to play.

Part of the problem is that the courts move very, very, very slowly for pro athletes; get arrested mid-season and courts are frequently all-too-willing to wait til the offseason to move forward. Especially hometown local courts!
